Familiarity, Fast Travel and Focus - Dragon's Dogma
That is a terrible title, I'm sorry. But let's start how we mean to go on. Here's an article about getting familiar with big open worlds - a couple of ways this feeling can arise, how it can conflict with design, and how Dragon's Dogma very nearly has some amazing ideas ... before cocking everything up at the last moment. Dragon's Dogma does that quite a lot.

That's a GameCube cake in the header image there. Which is a bit weird really ... to have a cake of the thing for which the celebrations are occurring. Imagine if your birthday cake every year was a life-size replica of your own body. Anyway, listen, here's me and Ger having a little talk about our second-favourite magical box full of secrets and delights.

Because this is no time to be beating around the bush with fancy headlines. This is a deadly serious article about the imagined relations of two trembling grotesques and the treats hidden beneath a familiar veil. Also some bonus thoughts about some other few demos I played. BONUS.

And a different kind of nostalgia. Not of pixels but of pages.

Cheap and Used - Prince of Persia (2008)
Two punt fifty, pal. How's that? It didn't come with a case or anything but I'm not too fussy. And neither were Gamestation - they'd sell anything. Remember that? When there were game shops on the high street? Ahh, simpler times ... sun shining, birds singing. My whole life stretching out ahead of me, the first tufts of hair coiling out - at last! - from betwe-

New faces, old friends - from Nier to Saints Row the Third
Hey it's me. What? No it's me ... Alex. Yes, that's right. We've been inseparable for several years, ever since our eyes met over that fatal trolley incident in the Lidl car park. You remember. You remember me. Here are some words, let them stand as a reaffirmation of our vows to each other. The blood pact. The shuddering oath.

Play it again - Wind Waker
Hello my love. I know, I know, it's all dark and miserable out there still. And that bastard gale, mercy me. But just turn off the Twilight Sad for a moment, stop daydreaming about mittens, and let's remember when it was nice outside. Let's think about the coming spring, the bright days after this dreary storm - let's think about Wind Waker.

Hey, cupcake. Wait ... are we doing pet names yet? Well, just in case, let me tell you about some demos that I played through recently. This book I bought said that's a sure-fire way to take any relationship to the next level. I took a shot at Amy, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Asura's Wrath, The Darkness II and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Maybe afterwards you'll let me stroke your eyebrows without any gloves on.

The Year in Moments

The Year in Moments
Well, bits of the year anyway. We covered most everything already in broad enough strokes, so here's an article about some of the smaller, perhaps more poignant moments which managed to root themselves into my mind grapes like various aggressive species of mould. There will be emotions, and butts, and bugs.
